Victims Turning To Alternate Sources Of Compensation

One of the most profound changes in raising money for various causes has come from crowdfunding sites such as GoFundMe and Indiegogo.com.

No matter what the cause for raising funds seems to be, from college students caught short on funds to helping pay the vet bills for beloved pet or to help someone with expenses after an accident, crowdfunding has become a phenomenon that allows ordinary people to reach out and ask for assistance through the power of the internet.

GoFundMe is set up where users can enter their zip code and find area residents who have launched campaigns. In Charleston, dozens of residents have started accounts in the past month. Other Charleston area accounts are also there that have been there longer.

Whenever someone donates to a campaign, the user will receive an email. Users are also able to withdraw funds from the account through a bank transfer. The cost of the service is a 5 percent fee of money raised, while the site WePay keeps an additional 2.9 percent and 30 cents for every donation made.

The most successful campaign on GoFund Me centers around a South Carolina child named Eliza who was diagnosed with Sanfilippo syndrome. Sanfillippo syndrome is a rare metabolism disorder that is both disabling and terminal. While Eliza’s situation has grown steadily worse, Eliza’s parents still hold out hope that her health could improve through gene therapy.

Before the creation crowdfunding websites, accident victims and their families may not have any sort of recourse in obtaining the money necessary to pay for hospital bills, medical costs and loss of income after the accident. Facing such a situation can often be painful and frustrating. While crowdfunding sites can offer some relief from concerned members of the community, there is never any guarantee that a campaign will be successful.
